COCKRAM Claude Claude Cockram was born on the 6th October 1885 and educated at Prince Alfred College and Scotch College, South Australia. He married Doris Carroll of York (born 15th February 1880?} on 2nd September 1919. After serving in World War 1, he took up farming at "Clear Hill", near Gnowangerup. He, with his brother Vivian, owned Goodwood Racecourse and they had helped to clear this racecourse land when they were lads. Their father, Albert Edward Cockram, who was chairman of Griffen Coal Mining, owned Belmont Racecourse. Coming straight from an office in Perth, Claude set about farming with a will. After a lot of hard work, with Doris by his side, (who often worked as hard as Claude did, drafting and yarding sheep, etc.), their farm became one of the best in the district. They reared a large family of two boys and six girls. Their eldest son, John, died at about three years of age. Their other children were Lynette, Judith, Barbara, Robert, Shirley, , Richard, Diane and Elizabeth.

Both Claude and Doris were very civil minded people who worked hard for the town and district and were very much involved in the Agricultural Society. Both Diane (Sadie), who is married to Athol Stewart, and Elizabeth still live in Ghowangerup (at the time this was written). Sadie and Athol, formerly of Stewart and Sons hardware store, are now enjoying a happy retirement. Elizabeth has been employed by the old established firm of G. S. Hendry and Co., for many years. Lynette lives in Cairns, Queensland. Barbara passed away a few years ago. Judith (Jane) and her husband , Norman Stewart farmed in Gnowangerup until Norman passed away. Judith retired to Albany but has since passeed on. Robert, who married Dawn Barton works for Wesfarmers and now lives in Perth. Shirley (Sue) married L.
